LEGAL AID OFFICE
Legal
Aid Office works
within the Committee for Human Rights Negotin since December 19th, 1999.
It was opened in cooperation with the Committee of Lawyers for Human
Rights from Belgrade, and continuation of its work was provided by the
support of Swedish Helsinki Committee for
Human Rights and Freedom House within the CHRIS
Network. Also, independent work of Legal Aid Offices within the CHRIS
Network (without YUCOM) is supported by the Swedish Helsinki Committee for
Human Rights since April 1st, 2003 and by the Open Society Institute since January 1st,
2006. According to evidence, around 30 persons a moth
address to the Office. This Office provides transparency of
its work and works through providing the legal advices, writing the legal
documents, being present at processes in the Court of Law, addressing to
the system institutions, and there is also direct or media communication
with citizens. Priority is the human rights protection of self-willingness
and legal arbiters in law institutions, and organizations that have public
influence, fight against corruption and discrimination on basis of
belonging to some minority group (political, racial, religious, national,
etc). It must be mentioned that the attitude of the small group of people
who considered this Office as a competition to the lawyers or as an
institution that is alternative to some public authority is changed.
Currently, most of the people who come to the Legal Aid Office are people
who feel that their human rights are violated by the loss of jobs. In
addition, some socially endangered people cannot fulfill certain rights in
area of social and health protection and in area of communal jobs.
Significant number of people comes to the Office because they think there
are prolonging and bias in already started cases. Sometimes, it is true,
and Office assists them in such cases by advice or by writing to the
Courts of Law.
