Statement of Deputy Ombudsman Dr Zorica Mršević on the start of the campaign "16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence"

Reducing the general level of violence, including one that happens on the streets, sports stadiums and other public places, starts with combating the domestic violence, said the Republican Deputy Ombudsman Zorica Mršević, marking the beginning of the global campaign "16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence" .

The campaign is taking place around the world in order to draw attention to the global level of the worldwide problem of violence against women. Also dates between 25 November - International Day Against Violence Against Women, and 10 December - International Human Rights Day are marked in order to symbolically link violence against women with human rights and emphasize that such violence is a violation of human rights.

Bearing in mind primarily the local examples of good practice, the Ombudsman considers that it is necessary to establish a unique system of institutional cooperation regarding the prevention of violence against women. In this sense, more cooperation is required between the professional teams both within the centers for social work, regional police departments and judicial organs, and other actors at the local level, but also is required enactment of detailed instructions on the procedure of employes in these organs in cases of domestic violence.
